Mom (1988)

I am riding the train from Boston to New York, to visit my mother and to continue to photograph my families vigil, while my mom is dying in the hospital. I have been physically and emotionally exhausted over the past four months as I alternate between two vastly different reasons for making photographs in a hospital setting; weekdays photographing the Mass General Hospital’s annual report, and weekends photographing a personal project focusing on my mother's end-of-life. As the hours pass quietly in my mothers room, I take a photograph of her staring up at me, with a look of both sadness and love on her face. I feel a need to document this passing of time, so I can look back and remember, and try to make sense of all that took place during this incredibly difficult period in my families life.
