The Meadowbrook School (2010-2021)
Moving to Boston threw me smack dab into the middle of the education capital of the world. Between universities, colleges, law, medical, prep and public schools, one can get a pretty good education here in the hub of New England.
To stand out and to attract students, schools needed to sell themselves, and they needed good photography to show themselves off. That's where I came in.
Photographing for educational institutions became a large part of my freelance business. Early on I began photographing regularly for Harvard, Tufts, Boston University, and a number of other institutions of higher learning. Over time I added a few prep schools to my client list. One of them was the Kindergarten-8th grade Meadowbrook School in Weston, MA.
I liked working for Meadowbrook right off the bat. It didn't take long to feel a part of the community, helped partly by being assigned a portrait session with each of the school's teachers and staff members. These sessions helped me to get to know everyone personally, which led to a greater photographic intimacy and understanding whenever I entered a classroom, photographed recess and sports, or shot in the lunchroom, library, and hallways.
While photographing at schools I have strived to produce images that show the process of how a child learns and absorbs knowledge. The photographic trust and freedom I was given at most of the schools I have shot at, and very much at Meadowbrook, allowed me to have deeper meaningful interactions with both students and teachers, and helped me to develop understanding in how best to make successful photographs of the educational and learning process.
